CBT helps you learn about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and how they connect. Thoughts, feelings, and actions are linked and affect each other.
CBT looks at:
- How you think about yourself, the world, and other people
- How what you do affects your thoughts and feelings
Once you understand more about how you think, feel, and act, you can start making changes. Often, changing one area leads to changes in other areas. For example, changing thoughts can change feelings. Changing actions can change thoughts, and so on.
CBT says events themselves don’t cause our emotions – our interpretation and thoughts about the event cause our feelings.
Using CBT, a counsellor can help you understand how your problem started and why it’s hard to cope with or overcome. Then you can learn to make changes to improve your feelings and see a way forward to solve the problem.
